That's deadline! If it wasn't on time, it doesn't count!

Thursday

On Thursday of last week, we were given a packet of test prep. It was oretty boring due to already learning the material and forgetting what to do on it. We did go outside though, and that was the fun part of the Thursday. we saw many people who went and got different textbooks for each class. I finished pretty quickly after we got outside and went ahead to review my answers.

Friday

On Friday the class took a quiz on reading strategies, MLA format, and the habits of mind from what I remember. The class also took a look at 2 " Final Salute" paragraphs made by other students and annotated them. I took notes on how to write a response to literature properly and learned how to properly put a response to literature paragraph together. The most important thing I thought Ms. Amezcua said about how to write a response to literature is you can only have one quote per paragraph

CAHSEE Practice

In class we were given a practice packet for what might be on the CAHSEE. I think that Ms. Amezcua did a good job on showing us how we are supposed to look at the text/questions. I also learned that before you read the text you read the questions and the answers to see if there is anything you can answer without reading the text and that if you look at the questions before you read the text, then you have an idea of what to look for in the text.

Friday

Friday in class we took a quiz on description and after the quiz we received paragraphs that the students wrote on the final salute and corrected some of the mistakes made on the paragraphs .

Learning How to get the main Ideas of text

Ms. Amezcua did a good job of teaching us how to take the main points from not only texts but pictures as well. It really helped to learn what's important and what is the real meaning behind it. The Final Salute had some very emotional pictures that had deeper meanings.

Reading Prompts

On Thursday Ms. Amezcua did a really good job of teaching us how to read prompts and answer questions. Now I know the right way to take tests with prompts and fully understand the text.

Reflection: Thursday

On Thursday, in class we received packets on "English 10 Test Prep". This packet had strategy's for reading a text. This packet also had different texts and questions responding to the text we had just read. We went outside and read and answered questions to help clear our minds and be in a bigger and clearer environment. When we went back to class we reviewed the answers we wrote for the questions.

The Lesson on Perserverance.

The lesson on Perserverance was a great idea of who would actually keep trying nomatter how hard something gets. It also showed great character. Perserverance is something that keeps you trying even when you want to give up. I was glad we did this lesson it gave me an idea of how I'll survive this school semester.

Reflection

In class on Friday we took a quiz on description, the four reading strategies, pre-reading, annotating, MLA format, writing an essay and using your sources, and intellectual perseverance. After we took the quiz we reviewed some of the paragraphs that we wrote for the "Final Salute" theme/main idea. We took notes on the structure of a paragraph and fixed grammar on the paragraphs.

Response to Literature

On Friday the 29th, in English class, we briefly discussed the orderly structure of a paragraph. I learned that in a response to literature, the main purpose is to point out the main idea/theme and give a detail to support that main idea. I never knew that there was a specific way to structure a paragraph when doing a response to literature. Of course I knew that we should use TAG(title, author, genre), point out the main idea, explain/use details- however- I never realized that a specific structure and procedures had existed. I also learned that I should always use a quote/citation to explain the main idea and that I should only use 1 citation per paragraph. Also, I learned a very important concept I shall remember throughout life: don't EVER, EVER, EVER end in a quote. These concepts I learned on Friday reflected & had changed the way I write my paragraphs for a response to literature.

CAHSEE

We did a CAHSEE practice packet and we went over it during class. We annotated, underlined some parts of the texts, and answered some questions. Later in the day, we went outside near the ASB and relaxed with some fresh air yet we still had to do some work. That was so chill and I hope we get to go outside more often!

Citations

In class we took an English test and i believe i passed with at least a B. Thanks to Ms. Amezcua for being a great teacher! We learned how to cite texts in class such as citing the bible. I had an example where we had to cite multiple texts by the same author. We had to just include a shortened title of the text in the citation.

Response to Literature Paragraph

On Friday after taking the quiz, we corrected paragraphs. We learned how to correctly format a response to literature paragraph, starting with correctly putting the title, author, and genre. Then comes the main idea, details with citation, explanation of quote, and conclusion. From correcting the paragraphs, I realized all the mistakes I made on my response to literature paragraph. This correcting activity made me realize that there is still a lot that I don't know/need to learn and that I need to refresh my memory of the things I learned in English last year.

Friday ,

Thursday's class went by pretty smooth . We got a CAHSEE packet with some pretty useful strageties to analyse text . We first went over some summaries on the "Final Salute" corrected some errors on them . Later on in class we got to work outside with a partner on analizing a text and answered questions . I like the fact we got to work outside it helped me clear my head and understand the text better . I had an issue with some savage ants creeping up on me you should get that checked out just saying .

Monday ,

Monday's class went by fast with the perseverance activity we did . For the activity we all stood up and lifted our arms up through a 6 minute song to prove perseverance in a physical form . This helped us get an idea on how to strive for something and not quit . We took notes on the habits of mind also and reading strageties . I finally understood the habits of mind so overall it was a good class .

CAHSEE Practice

On Thursday we recieved a CAHSEE practice packet. We first went over the packet as a class. We read the passages, annotated, and answered the multiple choice questions after. After we did a few practices we were able to go out for fresh air and finish our work outside we worked in partners and finished all the work we had to do. Im guessing that next week we will finish more of the packet in order for us to be prepared for the CAHSEE test semester.

Citations

On Tuesday during class we learned about citations. We all recieved a packet about how to do citations for specific sources. We each had a partner and we got our own source we were expected to explain to the class and teach them how to citate the sourcr. My partner and I had to teach the class how to citate a passage from the bible. After this activity I was able to learn how to citate different sources correctly.

CAHSEE packet

On Thursday in class we were working on the CAHSEE packet to help us get a better understanding on how the test is going to be like and the skills that we should use when we are actually taking the test such as reading the questions first before actually reading the text, annotate and highlight the main ideas, skim through the text and other skills.

Response to Literature

Though I have only spent one day in Ms. Amezcua's class, I have already learned something I believe would benefit me and my writing in the future! On friday, I learned that there was a certain structure in the way you should write a response to literature paragraph. I have always thought that you could just write it in any order you want as long as you get your point across, but this structure would hopefully keep your thoughts organized and also you would in a way make sure you have all the information you need to present by using it. On the other hand, something that I have never known before that I learned was that you should only include one quote in your paragraph. In all the response to lit. writings, I have thought that you should try to present as much evidence as possible so it would be valid so that was an interesting point I learned.

Thursday

Well, Thursdays, almost the weekend, what do you expect in an english class? Notes, read a book, analyze something, or review for something? Well, last Thursday, we reviewed for the CAHSEE. Which I thought that it was going to be boring, like most reviews. It wasn't, we actually went outside, not to get books, but to do the review outside, which was easier, entertaining, and warm, because the classroom is always cold. Going outside makes things easy to understand, because you don't focus a lot. In my opinion, sometimes when you focus a lot, you really don't understand what something, or somebody, is trying to say. Also, when you think about it, when you go out, you somehow "interact" with the environment, by being out, getting ideas out of it somehow. Also, being otuside lets you look at the sky and not at the bad, crappy ceiling of a classroom. It makes life easier.

Monday

Mondays, what do you think about Mondays? are they good? bad? annoying because it's the first school day of the week? Whatever the reason, Mondays are always boring. You go to school tired, go through your classes tired, learn something new that you end up forgetting. This Monday was different, the Perseverance activity was a good way of getting something stuck in your head, even in a Monday. The perseverance activity was to stand up (almost never happens in most classes), you had to put your arms in the air, and just wait. You had to keep them up for a whole song, which didn't happen because somebody (you know who) keep changing the song. It was hard, but it taught a valuable leason, when you start something, you can't stop doing it until you are done. I was about to do it with this paragraph...

The CAHSEE

Thursday. "Just another day," I tried to tell myself. I think I got through the day pretty well until sixth period came around. I just came from PE and thought, "This better be an easy sixth period and I just want to go home and sleep the day away." So when I got into the classroom, it seemed pretty normal. Well, until a foreign heaping stack of papers was waiting to devour me in boredom. That packet being a test prep for the CAHSEE.

When I we all went through it i just thought of a classroom scene where the teacher is just reading and reading and reading and all the students have expressions of being bored. Now coming back to reality, the class took an interesting turn. We could actually go outside and finish the packet! It was pretty funny that Ms. Amezcua was getting bored too. The rest of the period was pretty cool and interesting. I hope we get to do it again!

Perseverance

On Monday, we worked on perseverance by lifting our arms up and making it stay there while the music was playing. I was thinking to myself, "Wow, how long are we going to be doing this?" After about a good 10 to 15 minutes, my arms were so sore that I could barely write and I was shaking while I was writing. In this activity, it showed that I didn't give up and I was the last few standing with my arms up. I felt so proud of myself that day.

CAHSEE Packet

As soon as I saw the packet when I entered the room I thought "Oh great. A long lecture". It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I learned a six step way to pre-read an article. After a while I started to fall asleep since it was so easy. Good thing Mrs.Amezcua took us outside to get some fresh air. It really woke me up. I hope that we'll be able to do that again.

CAHSEE Packet

So, on Thursday we read through the CAHSEE packet. It showed us how to use our reading skills wisely and analyze the text to a better understanding. Ms. Amezcua was right even though she told us to use the skills at the front of the packet, I still couldn't do them I just read through the passages like I usually do. I think if I exercise those skills more throughout the year then I could apply them to the CAHSEE test. When going through the packet I started noticing that if you read the questions first and then the passage its easier to find the answers because you already know what you're looking for.  In the future I hope to use these skills for more then just the CAHSEE exam.

Intellectual Perserverance

This is kind of late but on monday we took notes on the habits of mind. The most interesting part of monday was the intellectual perserverance activity. In this activity we were suppose to keep our hands up for "one" song. If you dropped your arm you would have to sit down and couldn't finish it to the end of the "one" song. I learned intellectual perserverance is about having the focus to finish what you start.

Perseverance

I never would have thought that we would do this. We had just entered Ms. Amezcua's room and taken just a little bit of notes. After we had taken notes, Ms Amezcua made us raise our hands up for about one song (that was actually more like 5 songs). That was the most interesting part of the period. The only thing we did after that test of perseverance was we took notes on the habits of mind.

Perseverance

I know this lesson was taught a little less than a week ago, but I also thought it was extremely valuable. We were told to leave our arms up for way more than one song (thank you Ms. Amezcua, *insert sarcasm*) I know she was trying to prove a point that even though a situation may be difficult, you just need to stick through whatever you are doing and always finish what you start. I know she was teaching the lesson with a different type of perseverance but it still all proves that you need to stay focused and not concentrate on the pain and take pride in your work.

Response to literature

Many times when I have entered Ms. Amezcua I get proven wrong. These first couple weeks have consisted of foundation material that we need to know before we can move along to the rest of the year. I keep thinking 'I know this stuff' but of course being myself I would be wrong. I learn something new, and helpful.

The thing that I knew I would have to focus on and change would be my response to literature paragraphs. When we were told to write one for "Final Salute" once I found the main idea I looked for multiple quotes that would support it. My mind set was 'More evidence the better, right?'. Wrong. The things we need is the minimum: author, title, genre, main idea, one quote, explanation and then conclusion. I realized that putting too much information in one paragraph will just make dilute the purpose of it. One strong quote could get your point across better then a million insignificant one. Once again, thanks to Ms. Amezcua I am improving my writing one step at a time.

MLA formatting

We learned about MLA formatting by letting us figure out the problem and then telling the class about it. It  helped me figure problems by ourselves, and I believe I got more problem-solving skills. I had to figure out with my partner how we are going to tell the class, so it needed teamwork and description skills. I also learned many things that I did not know, such as what to do when you use the same resources two times. I thought you just write it two times, but I was remember it wrong. I have learned many more things about MLA citations, and it was a good to learn. I thought it was a fun way to learn in the long- term, and efficiently.

Response to Literature Paragraph

Today we learned how to structure a response to literature paragraph. Even though I already had a basic knowledge regarding that kind of paragraph, I still learned a couple of new things. I learned that there should only be one quote in each paragraph. Not three, not two, just one. I don't understand why there should only be one though. I mean, what if you need to support a quote with another one? It makes me intellectually curious! But besides that, I also learned that you needed to have a conclusion. I did not know that. I always thought that there was only one conclusion, and tht conclusion was found at the end of the essay. So overall, today was a pretty productive day for me. Not only in English class, but also in some of my other classes.

CAHSEE Test Prep.

Today I think the warm-up was extremely relevant for our lesson for the test taking strategies. I like how we all answered the questions together as a class instead of shouting out. The class itself should practice annotating more often, so we can get the hang of texts and comprehend easier. We should also do alot more vocabulary this year and read longer texts to get the hang of the CAHSEE. I think it was a great idea how we went outside for partial time of the class and were able to work in groups. Working as a group during the lesson today was extremely helpful in many ways.

The Final Salute

What I got out of the " The Final Salute " is that one death can really devastate a family and loving friends . The pain inflected on the victims close ones is unbearable and to think that his 23 year old pregnant wife has lost his soul mate and now has to stay strong but to not only for her but for that baby that she is carrying . Soldiers like Cathey should be honored for all they have done to keep our country safe this loss will not be forgotten as he is a hero figure to everyone . People who did not even meet him were impacted by this tragedy it comes to show how horrrible the site of a soldier coming home in a casket is .

Final Salute

The Final Salute by Todd Heisler is an article that was polished in November 11, 2005 .
This story is about this marine that die in war, but that not the sad part . No the main idea of this story is how James J. Cathey family Takes his death .
He left hi wife and parents, not to mention his unborn child, and many of his friends to meet his maker . Gavin Conley who was also a marine would always say " never leave a marine behind . "(Sheeler 2) and its true because he is still there for him even when James is dead . Gavin is their for his loved ones to cope . This article is really to me about how much you affect people after you die .

Activity: Test Prep.

Alright. I come to English class from an exhausting session of PE, then say good afternoon to Ms. Amezcua, and get on my way to my seat, until she tells me to pick up the papers in the front of the class. I'm thinking, "Fine. Sounds like another interesting article like "The Final Salute", not horrible". TEST PREP. With about 15 PAGES. Proved extremely wrong, and then I was thinking, "Wow. My day became from an alright day, to a terrific day filled with great knowledge and learning." Sarcasm intended.

Although this seemed pretty devasting at first, Ms. Amezcua still managed to get this assessment to work for us by letting us go outside and breathe some fresh air, which I think was pretty effective on my test taking skills. The passing students were sort of distracting, but it was overall a different and enjoyable way to read some passages and answer some questions.

Test preparation

When I walked in the classroom today and saw that thick "Test Prep" packet, I was like "Oh my gosh, another lecture." But I was proven wrong. Following the reading strategies actually got me more interested in what I was going to read. And the articles I read were pretty cool. I especially liked the article about the adolescent brain being compared to the adult brain. Today was overall a pretty chill day.

The Final Salute

The Final Salute is an article about a young woman named Katherine Cathey who lost her husband Jim Cathey to the war in Iraq. Jim Cathey was a Marine who died at such a young age. Jim Left the world before even being able to meet his expected son. Katherine was left in a very tough position as a future single mother. The article explains Katherines experiences when she first got the news and everything. the articel includes pictures of the casket and his funeral. Jim Died in pride and honor from serving his counrty, he was a very well respected man.

Test prep day!

Some valuable information was learned today. Test Prep. Oh joy right? But I have realized that this is actually useful information! And being able to go outside and learn was helpful too. The strategies for Test Prep kind of seem like a waste of time in the beginning, but when we actually applied them to the text and the questions, I automatically knew what to look for. I spent less time going back to the text and rereading it, and got some work done. In my opinion, and probably that of many other students in this class, Ms. Amezcua is a very great and fun teacher and I can't wait to learn more things in this class!

The Final Salute

In the article "Final Salute" by Jim Sheeler that main idea is how three different people experienced the death of a marine. These three people were his wife, friend Gavin Conley, and Major Steve Beck. "He wasn't suppost to come home this way" (Sheeler, 1). Major Steve Beck was the one who told the marine's wife that her husband was dead. Gavin Conley, who was also a marine, lived with a saying "Never leave a marine behind" (2). This article has to do with the loss with a loved one. "You can almost see the blood run out of their bodies and their hearts hit the floor. It's not the blood as much as their soul. Something sinks. I've only seen that when someone dies. And I've seen a lot of death" (3).

The Final Salute

The Final Salute was an article about how Lt. Cathey's death affected friends, family, and even strangers. "The passengers pressed their faces against the windows. Outside, a procession walked toward the plane" (Sheeler 2). This quote shows the effect that the death of a marine can have on people. "Then her eyes locked on the cargo hold and the flag-draped casket. Inside the plane, they couldn't hear her screams" (Sheeler 3). In this quote, Sheeler describes the marines painful experience in seeing her husbands casket. This quote helps explain the anguish that Lt. Cathey's family must be having. This article not only tells me that the death of a marine affects everyone, but that they will always be honored as well.

Final Salute

You meet many different people throughout your life. Maybe not always to the point in which you know them so well that you'd be crushed if you ever lost them. But no matter what, losing someone who has had an impact in your life, no matter how big or small that may be, is never an easy thing to deal with. Final Salute by Jim Sheeler is an article about a fallen marine and how the ones who loved and cared about him dealt with it. The story behind the curtains is quite touching. The marine who died in the article was Jim Cathey. His loss affected the lives of people, and the pain his loved ones felt must've been excruciating. And even though "'You can almost see the blood run out of their body and their heart hit the floor. It's not blood as much as their soul. Something sinks. I've never seen that except when someone dies. And I've seen a lot of death'" (Sheeler 4). That quote from Major Steve Beck really makes us think. What if he shows up at your door?

"The Final Salute"

"The Final Salute" was an article that talked about how Lt. Cathey's death affected the people around him. His death rocked the lives of his family "' I wish it was daytime for the rest of my life. The night is just too hard" (Sheeler 2). This quote is an example of how Lt. Cathey's wife felt about the night his casket was flown into an airport.

"The Final Salute" also touches on how Steve Beck has to inform the families of the fallen Marines. "Each door is different. But once they're open, Beck said, some of the scenes inside are inevitably the same" (Sheeler 4). This quote shows how the families seem to react the same way because they lost someone important in their life. I believe that the Final Salute truly shows how Lt. Cathey's death affected people and how the death of other Marines overall affect everyone.

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

In the article, "Final Salute", Jim Sheeler writes about how the death of a Marine can have a hard effect on not only friends and family but it can also have an impact on strangers. "Never leave a Marine behind" (Sheeler 2) shows that someone who sacrificed their life for this country will always be remembered in other people's lives. "Final Salute" shows the hardships of loosing a family member, a friend, and a stranger. "The passengers pressed their faces against the windows. Outside, a procession walked toward the plane" (2). This quote really gives the description of the importance a a fallen Marine especially because all the people on the plane watching attentively were only mere strangers so it's incredible to imagine the impact on a family member or friend. In the end, fallen hero will always be commemorated.

Perseverance Game

On Monday in class, I have participated in the perseverance.  This activity was really unexpected especially in an English class, but it helped me understand the concept of it. It was hard to keep my hands up for a long time like some students did, since it hurts when I put them up. I probably got them more than two minutes, but I forgot how long I put it up accurately. So, I have learned that intellectual perseverance is not giving up on a hard problem.

MLA

MLA. Alright, so this is probably one of the most non-interesting lessons in English class (in my opinion). I honestly think Ms. Amezcua did a good job teaching the lesson and it was a good idea to divide into sections other than reading the whole thing alone. I know MLA can be tedious and long but I also think it's extremely important. I'm glad Ms. Amezcua gave everyone a copy of the rules. Last year I had a hard time finding how to cite internet sources and I got some points taken away on some of my essays. It was kind of scary going up in front of the class even if all I had to do was circle and underline but it wasn't that bad. I still enjoy English class, good job Ms. Amezcua.

Final Salute.

[FINAL SALUTE.] By: Michael Green.

â„‘he Final Salute from Rocky Mountain News, by Jim Sheeler is a touching story about the hard journey of losing a loved one, who was in the military (marines in this case), and the hardship that you have to go through in this painful process. The Final Salute’s eminent idea is that it’s difficult to lose someone and that there are repercussions to everyone involved with that person as well as people that ascertain knowledge of the event. This is shown by the quote, “[telling a woman on a plane what had happened] ‘I’m escorting a fallen Marine home to his family from the situation in Iraq.’ The woman quietly said she was sorry, Conley said. Then she began to cry.” (Sheeler, 2) The woman wasn’t the only one crying after reading this touching and heartfelt article.

Final Salute

In the article, “Final Salute” by Jim Sheeler, it demonstrates main idea that at times, the things we don’t expect end up having the biggest impact on our lives. This is show through the quote that reads, “When he first donned the Marine uniform, Beck had never heard the term ‘casualty assistance calls officer.’ He certainly never expected to serve as one. As it turned out, it would become the most important mission of his life” (Sheeler 4). Major Steve Beck was trained and more then qualified to be able to go out and fight for his country but instead was assigned to knock on families doors, start and guide the journey after a love ones death. This quotation best exemplifies the main idea showing that it never crossed his mind to be in the line of work he is now but in the end he fulfilled his most important task.

Perseverance.

[Perseverance.]By: Michael Green

"It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer."
- Albert Einstein.
We learned about being able to persevere in class and how it's one of the major cornerstones of being successful in class a few days ago when Ms. Amezcua put our perseverance to the test. We each begun with our arms held straight horizontally at shoulder length, we then attempted to keep our arms out and up for as long as possible as Ms. Amezcua played Metallica from her custom RTD-2 cell phone in the background, however, slowly but surely our arms fell.

The more determined people ventured and tried to sustain themselves for as long as possible trying to prove to themselves that they could "hold their arms up for the longest amount of time". I stayed in the competition for a commendable amount of time however, I realized early on that this really didn't prove anything to me about "perseverance" not because it was a bad activity but because it wasn't an applicable perseverance scenario to me because short-term goals are relatively facile,
however I do need to discipline myself in long term goals. Although I didn't directly obtain something from this activity discussing perseverance only proffered the fact that I need to maintain working hard and not giving up on my goals.

The Final Salute

In the article, 'Final Salute' by Jim Sheeler he takes us on an emotional ride showing us the journey that Katherine Cathey had to take after finding out that her husband Second Lt. Cathey had died during the war. He starts off with focusing on Katherine Cathey showing her emotions and her atmosphere as she awaits for Lt. Cathey to return home. When his body arrives back home Katherine has a moment of weakness before going out on the tarmac she sadly says, "He wasn't supposed to come home this way." (Sheeler 1). Sheeler also takes into his article the point of view from Maj. Steve Beck, he tells us what hardship that the Major goes through. He includes Maj. Becks background story and how he got the job of being the one to deliver bad news to military families. And the last person that he decides to include in his article is Jim Cathey's best friend, Sgt. Gavin Conley. After reading this article you can easily tell what military families have to go through, and how it effects everyone in some way. But mostly you learn that out on the battlefield no matter what happens, no marine is left behind, meaning all our heroes come home.

"The Final Salute" paragraph

In the article, "The Final Salute", Sheeler explains about how Katherine Cathey lost her husband in the war while trying to withstand the emotional pain. For example, "Katherine, it's time" (Sheeler 2) said Maj. Steve Beck to tell her about the loss of her husband during the war in Iraq after promising her that he would return in time to see his son. The pain that Katherine Casey felt was very devastating because her husbands body was in a casket being delivered to her by plane. The one person to help her through her emotional time was Maj. Steve Beck, he trained hard to be a Marine but never suspected that of all jobs in the marines he'd end up being a casualty assistance calls officer. He delivers the bad news to military families and guides them through the rough times that are before them. Sheeler shows one last major point of view in his article which is, Sgt. Gavin Conley, Jim Cathey's best friend. He was there to bring his best friend home as they say in the marines "Never leave a Marine behind." (Sheeler 3). This article goes to show that Jim Cathey's death effected all of those who knew him, and its not just about this one fallen Marine but all our soldiers who serve for our country effect all of us in some way, and somehow.

The Final Salute

It is very hard to lose a loved one. But knowing that he passed a loyal warrior can give you pride and gratefulness. In the book, Final Salute: A Story of Unfinished Lives written by Jim Sheeler, we should all know that even through all the pain and suffering, there is that one person that can pick you off your feet again and show you that even though he/she is no longer with them, they will never be forgotten for what they did for you and other people.
In the story that has become an emotional roller coaster ride for all, Maj. Steve Beck is responsible for telling a family what they never wanted to hear. It's not only hard for the family but it also affects Beck's everyday life. But knowing that he is there to support you and help you through the drastic journey can lift some weight off your shoulders. Without the comfort or support, you wouldn't know how to cope. This quote cause my eye and also supported my theme. This really shows how dedicated he is to his job: I actually start thinking about it the moment I wake up. It's such an important job that I just don't want to mess up. I just want it to be perfect."(qtd. in Sheeler Final Salute) Even though you have the mind set that no one will be there for you in this time of need, you should really think again.

Citations and Perseverance

Hi Again! Well since the assignment got jumbled up, I thought I would do both. But on different posts of course.

Well on Monday we were to learn about perseverance. Not knowing what was going to happen next, I was pretty "weirded out" about it. We were to hold our arms out and "persevere" while listening to some of Ms. Amezcua's music. It was pretty funny until the burn started to settle in. It hurt with a burning passion. Yeah, that's how much pain I felt. But that's just me. Anyways, it goes to show that you can persevere if you put your mind to it (or in this case your upper body strength) and that you can pull through any case if you have that drive to do so.

Yesterday we learned about citation. "Oh GREAT," I thought. But it wasn't really that bad. All we had to do was to annotate our packet that was given to us and make sure that these citations are almost drilled into our brains. It's really important to know how to annotate. It can be really beneficial and save your academic life!

Final salute

In the article "Final Salute" by Jim Sheeler, a Marine dies during war. Deep sorrow is brought upon his family when Major Steve Beck tells about the casualty. But losing someone, close or not, is not a chance to give up on life, but to rather stay strong and fight through the pain. Beck tells reporters, "In this business, I can't save his life. All I can do is catch the family while they're falling," (Sheeler, 4). No one can bring him or her back, and another death will just cause more sadness in an unfair world. The death of a beloved son, husband, or friend is devastating, but life goes on and does not stop for one person.

MLA citations- homework

I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. I'm lucky I logged on in time before class tomorrow, but if I'm not doing this right, can someone give me Ms.Amezcuas website so I can check the assignment. I thought we were supposed to write a couple paragraphs on the Finale Salute and cite our work, but no one else did it like that.

In class on tuesday, we were given a handout explaining all the different ways to cite work in a paper. I've never written an essay where I had to cite work in the essay, so that's one thing I learned. Another thing I learned is how to cite work in my essays. It's actually not that hard. When we high-lighted all the rules, I didn't have to read the whole handout and the rules where clear. That worksheet will come in handy whenever I need to add citations. I also learned that keeping my arms up is harder then I though, I just get so distracted! >=/

MLA Citations

In class yesterday we learned about all the different rules of citations. At first I thought that I knew everything I needed to know about MLA, but it turns out there were a lot of things I didn't know. I have always had problems with citing texts with multiple authors or ones with no authors at all, and this lesson taught me how. The handout Mrs. Amezcua really helped me have a good understanding of each rule. Now I can cite any text when I am doing essays without any problems.

MLA citations, oh joy.

One of the most uninteresting things in English for me personally and for just about everyone, I would expect, is MLA formatting. I always saw it as something that English teachers liked to see because it was formal. I found out today that for that one part of it actually is to prevent kidnapping. Well not "kidnapping" but plagiarism, and the part that prevents that is citations.

I actually learned a lot today, because most teachers go over the general stuff such as books and articles but of course I never or almost never seem to use these. I seem to always find those articles with no authors, or multiple authors and other sources that are impossible to cite. Although I was pretty bored through this lesson I was so thankful that Ms. A went over all of this because come the reasearch paper I would have been more then a little lost.

So in the end, I realized three things today:

-Everything we learn in class is helpful at one point in your life its not just something to waste your time

- You can get a quote from just about everything

and

- Thanks to the lesson today MLA citations aren't that bad.

Change of Plans!

Can everyone please blog their paragraph I assigned for Homework! Spread the word please!

Citations

Today in class, we learned all about the different citations, from one with multiple authors to web citations. We learned how to properly create citations for different sources through an activity, where partners were assigned a specific citation and they had to present the rule and example of that particular citation. On the handout that Mrs. Amezcua gave us, there were all the different types of citations, we annotated the handout circling the rule and underlining the example. This made the handout easier to read and understand, I think that after this class I gained more common knowledge on all the different types of citations that I was unaware of. Now I can become a better writer, now that i can properly get a quote with an accurate citation, and pay my attributions to the author.

Activity: Perseverance.

I learned a couple things from the activity that we did today:
1. I will NEVER do that again. It was almost like for 8 minutes, and I was in sheer pain after. Barely could write actually, took me a while to get back on track.
2.  Perseverance is all in the mind. Throughout the most of the activity, I was telling myself in my head that I was in pain all along, but once I focused and told myself to just do it, it was a little more easier to do. I think this also relates with INTELLECTUAL perseverance. If you get writer's block, or if you get tired, you just have to focus and just do it, get over yourself.

So, class was actually really productive today. Well, for me.

Perseverance?

The whole talk about perseverance and the activity we did earlier, in class, got me thinking: If keeping your arms as long as you can is an example of perseverance, then won't living be the hardest example of perseverance? I mean, most people decide to live through all life's pains and hardships instead of ending all the pain. It just hit me right now how much we live through just to get to the end of the day.

That's deadline! Thanks for your posts!

My full name is Lianne Briana Aratea and I was born on October 25, 1996. I am typically a happy and weird person and I love making people laugh. My family and friends are what basically makes me happy everyday, even though they can get on my nerves. I also go by the nickname "Pegasus" which was given to me by my friend Glaiza, and I seem to be called that by plenty of people ever since. I lived in Spring Valley for six years before I moved to Chula Vista and I have enjoyed living here ever since. Both of my parents are/were in the Navy (my mom is active and my dad retired a few years ago) so I am surprised by the fact that I haven't really moved anywhere besides California.

Another thing you need to know about me is that I seem to have a strange laugh, which causes other people to laugh. I also tend to be very awkward and quiet when I first meet you but after I get comfortable then I can be myself around you. I think that should be enough for a basic run-down, but you can get to know me anytime!

I dispice fake people so don't try to be someone your not and be real with yourself and stop trying to live up to everyone elses standards . Agustin Rodriguez-Cabada

Have you ever lived in a different country for more than ten years? I have, and I doubt you had. I lived in Tijuana for about eleven or twelve years, which was safer back then. I was born there in January 10, 1996. When I was in summer break for fifth grade, I moved to the United States, where I went to Eastlake Elementary for sixth grade and Rancho Del Rey Middle for seventh and eighth grade. Those years were awesome, because everything was simple and easy. Then time passed and middle school flew away like a bird in a car's windshield. In Olympian High School, where I started my high school education, everything started to get harder and less interesting. High school made me realize that I was lazy. About five months ago, I got a brand new, used puppy that my sister called “Poockie,” he usually brings his toys to me… it’s annoying…

Charles Moreno

There are many things to talk about in life, first off let me introduce myself. My name is Charles Moreno born on February 26, 1996 in Daly City, California currently attending OHS as a 10th grader at the age of 15. As the oldest child in my family, I grew up with three other brothers and two loving parents and along the way my family has adopted four dogs.

I may not look like a teen who loves to run, but I am. I play for the JV OHS track and field team as a sprinter. If you were wondering my best time for 100 meters its 12.6 seconds and for 200 meters its 27.4 seconds. When there is nothing to do for the day, I end laying on my bed sleeping, but other than that I spend my time chilling with friends. I have a best friend/girlfriend named Lauren Soriano who's always there for me when I need somebody.

Other than spending time with her and my friends I tend to focus on school a lot. My favorite subject to learn in school is math because it's easy for me to comprehend and my least favorite subject to learn is history, but hopefully that will change for me. Well, this is all I have to say about myself alright bye.
